Q&A - Competition

How did you get started?

I guess riding flatland back in the 80's. But when I moved to Vegas nobody rode flatland so I would hang out with a few skaters who had halfpipes in thier back yards. Soon I was turned onto BMX racing and it was on from there. In 1990 I was working for a bike shop that then guided me towards some road races including some bi/tri-athalons, and ultimatly Mtn bike racing including Downhill, Dual Slalom, and CrossCountry races.

List your competitive highlights:

Finishing in the top 10 in class in both 20" and 24" for the local season.

What are you planning for next season?

Having raised a family and being in hiatus for about 14 years from bikes, I plan on getting my feet wet this year and getting my wheels back under my feet. However next season I will be hitting all nearby races. Focusing on the Mtn west searies and Fontana races as well as Sea Otter. I plan on entering Dual Slalom, 4X, and some super D races as well. I also will be doing some local BMX races on both 20" and 24" for cross training.

What has been your biggest accomplishment?

While going to highschool, I also worked for the bike shop and raced three different diciplines of bicycles. Hitting whatever big races nearby that I could. It was a crazy load for a 17 year old.

Q&A - Personal

What inspires you to compete?

In this present time, I am inspired by the friends I see from my past that still race and excell at what they do. Back in the day it was to belong, and to beat my friends on the track.

Describe your style...

HA HA, that's and easy one. Old school BMX! That is what everyone says when they see me ride. That and all out. I get it done, and done on flats!

Why do you like this sport?

It's the freedom and the way riding lets you be who you are. I never really care what people think of me while I am finishing first or crashing in the dirt, I just like to be riding and trying to progress. Speaking of progression, bicycles and riding are a continuing evoloution of progression in style, personality and skill.

Why do you compete?

For me I like to compete to enjoy the thrill of the chase. I also like to compete to prove to myself that I am progressing and improving-you know, kinda like self gratification.

Do you train? What does your schedule look like?

At 36 years old I am learning I have to train harder and smarter than I did as a kid. Having started a new program, I will be training no less than 4 days a week. Those other 3 days will still have riding in them but I will be coaching my daughters softball team. Next year the 37 year olds better look out, 'cause here I come!!!

Q&A - Favorites

  • Favorite Car: Most old hot rods. But if I had to choose one it would be a 1950 Ford Woody
  • Favorite Magazine: Decline
  • Favorite Movie: Right now I am hooked on anything with bikes in it.
  • Favorite Trick: CandyBar-I used to be able to do several variations including a table-top candybar (SICK), but that was all back in the day.

  • Favorite Rider: Lopes, that guys is sick!
