What inspires you to compete?

I always wondered if I was as fast as I thought I was... and I knew that racing would also help me become a better, smarter, stronger rider.

Music?

I like all styles of music. I used to be a pro musician, including playing bass in a band called World Tribe. Playing music and riding off-road have a lot in common... timing is everything!

What has been your most embarrassing moment?

There are many to choose from... crashing at the BITD Las Vegas 300 was fairly embarrassing. A little humility & pain provided a definite reminder of what can happen during a race!

Why do you like this sport?

The adrenaline rush, getting in a zone and staying focused, the physical conditioning, being outdoors, quality time with family and friends, road trips, feeling alive, enjoying freedom and having FUN! The off-road racing community is a great thing to be associated with. There's a saying that "bad roads bring good people".

Employment / Experience Summary

You live many lives in one lifetime... son, brother, musician, husband, father, teacher. I currently teach biology at Fremont High School in South Central Los Angeles...

Like father... like son!

Hello Mike, I usually always build my own kits. In the last 5 years I have bought two rtr's. Those rtr's I use for mainly bashing around.

10/17/20092009 BITD Terrible's Gran PrixBITD - Ironman-Expert3rd Place - This was my first official Ironman race for Best in the Desert. I hadn’t had a race since the Blue Water GP back in May, but I’d been doing a lot of riding and practicing in the months preceding this event. I knew I could go the distance, but I could not anticipate every new strategy that would be necessary to place better than third... this time! I took advantage of the opportunity to pre-run the course in the morning unclassified race. It was good to get a feel for the racetrack, dial in the Raptor 700, and warm myself up before the main event. During the main event, I was third into the 1st turn. The track was dusty on the first lap, and poor visibility was an issue. This is when the morning’s pre-run became advantageous. On three occasions on the first lap, I was passed as I broke hard and slowed down for extremely sharp turns. Each of those times, the guy who passed me either missed the turn or crashed, because they didn’t know what to expect! The last guy who tried it was in my class, and he never caught up after that. After completing the first 8-mile lap, I had much improved visibility for the remainder of the race. This allowed me to go as fast as possible and create a gap between me and whoever was behind me. I was having a great time as I made a quick pit stop after lap 3 for a splash of gas, a quick check of the tires, and a wipe of the number plates. It was fast and furious all the way through, until I finally got lapped by a few of the pros, including Wayne Matlock, on my 7th lap. After the race, one of the pros said that I held him off and he couldn’t pass me for about a mile. I took that as a big compliment! He wasn’t upset, because I didn’t know he was a pro until he took this crazy line on the inside of a turn. When I caught a glimpse of his number plate, I took the next turn wide and let him pass on the inside. As soon as I came across the finish line, I knew I had done pretty well, but I wasn’t exactly sure where the other 5 guys in my class were. One of them was right in front of me. I later learned that I only missed 2nd place by 44 seconds. Had I known I was that close, I think I would’ve been able to hunt him down. However, I never saw his dust and I never had him in my sights, so I didn’t know that he was within my reach. Next time, I’ll try to keep a closer eye on the competition! Besides the race, it was an awesome weekend spent with old friends (Fernie, Frank, Brittany, Jared, Josh, Chris & Big D), new friends (even the competition… wut up Eric, Alejandra & James!), and family. Casey, Richard, Diane, George, Greg and everyone else at Best in the Desert always do an awesome job. You always know you are in good hands when you race with Best in the Desert. There were photographers from Event Photo Digital and ATVriders.com taking pictures and getting riders to show off for the camera. I raced about 80 miles total that day, no crashes, the weather was perfect… man, you should’ve been there!

12/6/20082008 BITD Henderson 400BITD - ATV Amateur Sportsman2nd place! Danny, Fernie & I all had a pretty smooth race... except for the time that Fernie went over the bars! It was a great day for racing, however, and we were able to keep with it to the end for a solid 2nd place finish. I'll post our standing in our class for this seasons points race as I get the official results. Thanks to all my family, friends and sponsors for their unyielding support all season long. I can't wait for the first BITD race of 2009... the Parker 250 on January 10th in Arizona!
